Paul Hollis Rare Coins was proud to bring "home" to New Orleans the most valuable coin to have ever been struck in Louisiana. This coin was publicly exhibited for the very first time at the exact location where it was struck 165 years ago - at the New Orleans Mint. The last time this coin was sold was in 2006 for $1.5 million. But the story does not end there. During the same day that this rare $10 gold eagle was struck another unique gold coin of a different denomination was struck as well. It was a $5 half eagle bearing the same date - 1844 and it also has a bold "O" mint mark on the reverse of the coin signifying that it was created in New Orleans prior to the Civil War. Paul Hollis Rare Coins would like to reunite these two very special gold coins and display them together side by side. The union of these two coins 165 years later would likely be the most important and valuable two-coin collection the world has ever seen. Certainly, these two coins would be the most valuable pair of coins from the historic U.S. Mint in New Orleans. The coin that is at-large is the $5 half eagle that was owned by King Farouk of Egypt until his exile in 1954. His entire coin collection was hastily auctioned and most of the U.S. coins have been brought back to the United States. The half eagle gold coin remains at-large today. However, rumors exist that this coin is currently in either of two states - Louisiana or Texas.

A minimum $1,000,000 REWARD is being offered by Paul Hollis Rare Coins in an attempt to purchase the Proof 1844-O Gold Half Eagle so that both coins can be together again. For more information on this reward or to visit Paul Hollis Rare Coins click here.
